SuperSheroes and Society

Women in Comic Books

Spiderman. Batman. Teen Titans. Avengers. Suicide Squad. Within the past few decades these and other popular comic hero franchises have come to the forefront of the public eye through their TV Show, theme park attraction, and Hollywood production adaptations. One of the most exciting, and perhaps controversial, parts of the comic universe is its female characters. Their background stories, their bodies, their costumes and their battles have captured the attention of millions.

Recent conversations have called these aspects into question, particularly in relation to coverage of female stories and their anatomically unfeasible bodies in comics. Join us for a discussion with specialists on female representation in the comic, manga & graphic novel fields to explore the ways in which comics propagate or challenge harmful gender stereotypes.

Addressing the normalisation of gender based violence challenges the current narratives within comic books and is in line with our Help Anna campaign.
